I don't understand the layout of this site. Where can I find what?
The site breaks down like this:
- ABOUT ATA: This is where you can find general information on the ATA, our history, our curriculum, and more. This is the informational section that lets people know who we are and what we are all about. This is also where our Media Gallery is located, a fun section including videos, virtual tours, and lots of great images.
- TAEKWONDO: This is where you can find general information about Taekwondo itself, from its history, to our belt ranking system, to Songahm Taekwondo and more.
- TOURNAMENT: This section is the equivalent to "On The Mat" from our previous website. This section includes World and State championship standings (current and archived), upcoming tournaments schedule, tournament rules, and more. This is also where you will find all the latest information on our annual "big three" tournaments: Fall Nationals, Springs Nationals, and the Songahm Taekwondo World Championships.
- SCHOOLS: This is where you can find Licensed locations based on State or Zip code. Once you have selected a location, you can find contact info, images, maps, and more!
- myATA: This section grants more features to members with a site account. For "Guests", you can manage your account preferences and newsletter subscriptions. All other account types have access to the same featuers and more, depending on your login level (explained in more detail later in this FAQ). Basically, use the myATA section to review information and access site features as they apply to your personal relationship with the ATA itself, with excellent features and info for Members all the way up to School Owners!
What browser and options do I need to best use this site?
While the site will likely perform well on any browser released within the past few years, for best performance we recommend at least Internet Explorer 6 and/or Netscape Navigator 7.
We also recommend having Java enabled in your browser options, as well as having Macromedia Flash Player Adobe Acrobat Reader and Windows Media Player.
Finally, while the site was designed to load on a dial-up connection (28K, 56K), your performance will be tremendously greater on a high-speed connection (Cable, DSL, etc.).
On the plus side, the above recommendations will not only enhance your ATA website experience, they will also enhance your overall web experience, considering that a large amount of websites recommend the same basic browsing setup as we do.
How do I enable Java in my browser?
Many of our site features require Java to be enabled in your browser. In many cases, this will correct problems you might be encountering with this site.
Enabling Java In Your Browser:
Internet Explorer 6: Choose "Tools", then "Internet Options." Under Internet Options, choose the "Advanced" tab, then scroll down to "Microsoft VM". Once there, make sure "JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled" is checked. After checking the option, choose "Apply" at the bottom of the Internet Options window and restart your machine.
Netscape Navigator 7: Select "Edit", then "Preferences." Under Preferences, click the "Advanced" category. Once there, check the "Enable Java" option on the upper right hand side of the window.
For other browsers and versions, please check your respective browser's help files.
How do I get Macromedia Flash Player?
Macromedia's Flash Player is one of the most widespread and useful plugins available for browsers today. Not only is it useful for this site, but it will enhance your browsing experience for many, many other websites.
To install the free Macromedia Flash Player, please click here.
Where can I get Adobe Acrobat Reader?
Adobe Acrobat files are a great way to distribute documents across the web. This site uses this format extensively.
Adobe Acrobat Reader is free, and can be downloaded here.
Where can I get Windows Media Player?
Windows Media Player is one of the most widely used video playback and streaming tools on the Internet. Currently, our site's videos use this format exclusively. If you are using a Windows-based computer, chances are that you already have it installed (although you might need to upgrade your version to watch our videos).
Windows Media Player is free, and can be downloaded or upgraded here.
Do I need to create a site account in order to use this website?
No. Anyone may use this website without a site account. To access certain features and areas, however, a site account is needed. As of right now, the main feature requiring a site account is myATA, which allows users to modify their preferences and have more accurate management of their newsletter subscription(s), as well as allowing ATA members, instructors, and school to review their information and history.

How do I change my site account preferences?
To change your account preferences, including password, email address, and security level, log in to the site, choose "myATA", then choose "Preferences".
Can I change my site UserName?
No. Once a username is chosen, it cannot be changed. If you really, absolutely must change your username, you will need to have your account deleted and then create a new account with the username that you prefer.
To delete your account, please use our Contact Us: Site Help page.
What are the different account types? Should I upgrade my site account?
A created site account automatically defaults to "Guest" login level, unless a user chooses to upgrade during account creation and supplies the correct information to do so.
Account upgrades can be accomplished during Account Creation and also at any time later, using the Preferences page (must be logged in to do so).
You may upgrade your account from "Guest" to these other user levels:
- "Member" (an ATA member; i.e. a student who is a member of the ATA)
- "Instructor" (a certified instructor)
- "School Owner" (an individual who is currently the legal primary owner for one or more active clubs and/or schools)
Create a site account
Upgrade your account using the Preferences page
How do I upgrade my site account?
During your site account creation, make sure to choose the appropriate category option under "UPGRADING YOUR ACCOUNT" and MAKE SURE to enter your correct and most appropriate ATA membership number(s).
For example, a School Owner should enter their primary school number in addition general ATA number, and an Instructor should enter their Instructor number in addition to their ATA number.
ATA members (not school owners or instructors) should of course enter their ATA number.
NOTE: Please choose only one account option to upgrade to during account creation and upgrade. Please do not attempt to select more than one account type, or enter membership numbers for more than one account type.
As a reminder, if you do not choose to upgrade during account creation, your account will default to "Guest" status.
If you have already created your account as a "Guest", simply login to the site, choose "myATA", then choose "Preferences" to upgrade your account.
I can't upgrade my site account. Help!
There are a few common reasons why people encounter difficulty upgrading their account.
Most of them involve providing information that does not match up with our internal records. For security reasons, if the information does not match up exactly with our internal records, the account will fail to upgrade and remain at its current level.
- DOUBLE CHECK THE NAME YOU HAVE PROVIDED
Your first and last name must be entered exactly as they appear on your ATA membership card, punctuation and all. This includes "Jr.", "Sr.", "III" etc. on a last name. The single most common problem upgrading an account is that users often forget to include this information, or mispell or enter their name differently than is in our records.
We recommend referring to your ATA membership card before creating or upgrading a site account. If unable to do so, ask your instructor verify your information with ATA HQ.
If you need to make changes to your name in your site account, you may do so while entering your upgrade information (both tasks can be accomplished from the Preferences page).
- ATA NUMBERS
Another common problem with account upgrades is how ATA numbers are entered.
Standard ATA numbers (####-#####) should be entered with the dash (-).For example, enter "1234-56789" and not "123456789".
Instructor and School numbers should be 4 digits (####). If you have a 3 digit number, enter it with a zero (0) first. For example, a number of "123" should be entered as "0123".
Upgrade your account using the Preference page
If the above suggestions do not resolve your issue, please use our Contact Us: Site Help page. Can I have a site account that is two or more types?
No. Each upgraded site account depends on the membership number(s) used to upgrade the account, and the features available are different for each account type. You must create a separate site account for each login level you want, or use the Preferences page to change your account type as needed.
For example, if you are a School Owner and wanted to be able to access both your school information and your own personal history as an ATA student, you would need to either a) create two site accounts: one for "Member" and one for "School Owner", or b) use the Preferences page to change your account type to access your different information.
If you choose to create two accounts, each account must have its own unique username.
If you choose to change your account type as needed, you are allowed to switch as often as you desire with no restrictions (provided you have the correct information to do so).
I am having a problem logging in to the site. What do I do?
Make sure that you are using the correct username and password. Keep in mind that this is "case sensitive", which means that if you used any capitalization during your account registration, you must enter information in the exact same way when logging in to the site. For instance, "ATANut" would have to be entered in exactly as shown; "atanut" would not work. This applies to both username and password.
Also keep in mind that your username may be different from your name. While some people might choose to use "John" as their username, others may prefer nicknames like "atadragon." Make sure you are logging in with the unique username you chose during your account registration, and not just your first name.
If you are certain that you are using the correct username and correct password and are still having trouble logging in, please use our Contact Us: Site Help page.
We will look into the problem and respond as soon as possible.
I have forgotten my password. Help!
To retrieve your password, you may use our Lost Password function. Once there, enter your email address and click the "Retrieve Password" button. Your password will be emailed to you.
IMPORTANT: For security purposes, the email address entered must be the same email address that is associated with your site account.
If the above option does not resolve your problem, please contact us using the Contact Us: Site Help page.
How do I delete my account?
At present, only ATA Headquarters can delete a site account. To do so, please contact us using the Contact Us: Site Help page.
IMPORTANT: For security purposes, this email must come from the same email address that is associated with your site account.
We will respond with confirmation as soon as possible.
Where do I find information regarding ATA Sanctioned Tournaments?
For major tournaments (World and National Championship tournaments), check our Major Events page.
For all tournaments, access our complete Tournament Schedule.
For tournament rules and clarifications, visit our Tournament Rules page.
For general tournament info, please visit our comprehensive Tournament Section and explore the great information there.
Last, our News and Events sections often contain items relating to ATA tournaments.
The Tournament standings information looks incorrect. Who do I talk to about this?
The most appropriate point of contact for information, clarification, and corrections regarding our tournament standings depends on the competitor's region. Please see our Tournaments Contact Page for more details.
General tournament-related questions or concerns (not specifically related to an individual from a designated region) should be directed to Master Jay Kohl at 501-568-2821 or email email@example.com.
Do I need anything special to watch the Videos in your Media Gallery?
Our site uses Flash file formats to stream videos. As long as you have the most recent Flash Player installed on your computer, you should be able to stream the videos.
There is also always the slight chance that high Internet traffic ("congestion") might cause our videos to buffer slowly or not play at all. Just like traffic jams on the highway, this is annoying but beyond either our or your control.
Download/Upgrade Adobe Flash Player
Why can't I watch your Virtual Tours in the Media Gallery?
Most likely, it's because you don't have Java enabled in your browser. The Virtual Tours will not launch without it. Check your browser settings/options and make sure Java is enabled.
If you are certain that you have Java enabled, try reloading the Virtual Tour to give the Java applet another chance to load correctly.
Enabling Java in your browser
Why don't the Images in your Media Gallery "pop-up" when I click them?
Most likely, it's because you don't have Java enabled in your browser. The image pop-ups will not launch without it. Check your browser settings/options and make sure Java is enabled.
